Try Some Loose-Leaf Tea, Get an Infuser

When you purchase a loose-leaf tea, you are purchasing quality. There are many online sources that carry oustanding loose-leaf teas along with local coffee shops. Not only can you enjoy black and green tea, but you can explore the world of oolong, white, flavored, and herbal teas.  How do you steep these teas?

There are a number of options available to you to steep your teas. You can easily purchase paper tea filters. These are simple to use.  You just open them up, and dump in the desired amount of loose-leaves and steep. Paper filters are nice because you don’t have to worry about the clean up.  Just toss it away with no mess. These filters are inexpensive though you may have to go to a coffee shop or order them online. The downside to paper filters is sometimes they impart an off flavor to the tea. It is up to you if you can stand the flavor difference or not.

Another great option for loose teas are metal infuser baskets made from mesh. These can be found in forms that can sit in a cup or that are part of an entire teapot. You will need to decide how much tea you drink. Clearly if you drink a lot of tea you could consider getting something like a heavy duity cast iron tea pot that will steep a lot of tea and stay warm for a very long time. Teapots and baskets can also be found in pyrex glass and ceramic. The main complaint about the wire mesh infusers is they can be a pain to clean out.

The third type of infuser uses gravity to separate the tea from the tea leaves.  This infuser is a container that has a pressure button and a filter in the bottom.  The tea drains away from the tea leaves. Sometimes the filter shifts though which can create a very large mess when you try to drain your tea.  You end up with a mixture of tea and tea leaves.

Loose teas are so flavorful and rich that you should really treat yourself to it sometime. You will really appreciate the appreciate the difference from store bought tea bags. Settling down with a cup of tea is just what you need to treat yourself to!

What Does Independent Publishing Mean?

April 29, 2011 in Uncategorized | Comments (0)

There are a lot of different titles and labels when it comes to the world of publishing, and these can get a bit confusing. One of the labels you will hear the most – one of the most important ones to understand, and perhaps one of the most misunderstood – is independent publishing.

image

Before you can understand exactly what independent publishing is, you need to gain an understanding of the difference between traditional publishers and self-publishers. In order for the book to be printed by a self-publisher (as the name implies!), the writer has to pay money up front, which enables the printing of the book. Just about anyone can self-publish a book, as most self-publishers will let anyone publish a book as long as that person has the money. Traditional publishers, on the other hand, operate in the opposite manner; they usually pay the author an advance up front, and they pay the author royalties off the sales of the book.

The “Big 6″ are the names you will see most often when it comes to traditional publishing: Hachette, HarperCollins, MacMillan, Penguin, Random House, and Simon & Schuster. But in addition to these six companies and those under their umbrellas, there are hundreds of other traditional publishers; and this is where it gets tricky. All of these publishing houses who are not under the umbrella of the Big 6, but who still operate as traditional publishers, are considered independent publishers. What this means is simply that they are not funded by the Big 6; what it does not mean is that they are funded by their writers! Many self-publishing houses have turned this into a confusing label over the last several years, as they have started calling themselves “independent publishers,” even though they are truly self-publishers.

If you are a writer, and you are looking to have a book published, the best thing for you to do is research as much as possible! If you move away from the Big 6 when it comes time to find a publisher, make sure you find a publisher who ascribes the right label to their company. If you go with an independent publisher, you can have a great, professional experience in which your book is widely distributed; if, on the other hand, you go with a self-publisher who labels themselves as an independent publisher, you will end up spending money up front, and you may end up unhappy with the entire experience!

How To Win Your March Madness Bracket

April 28, 2011 in Uncategorized | Comments (0)

Tags:

Around the beginning of March, people all over begin to get excited about college basketball. Even those who have not watched a game or checked a score all season prepare to fill out their brackets for the March Madness tournament, and they soon find that they are caught up in the excitement! Of course, for such people, they face one major problem: they don’t have the slightest clue which teams they should pick to win! If you are one of those people who have missed every college basketball game of the season but still enjoy filling out a bracket, these tips can help you have success! After all, a winning bracket does not actually require you to know anything about any of the teams involved!

Firstly, you should go with the numbers. People are often criticized when their bracket is “all chalk” – meaning that they have picked all the top seeded teams – but at the same time, these teams are seeded highly for a reason! Of course, it is unlikely that you can win a bracket pool by simply picking the highest-seeded teams all the way, as part of the excitement of March Madness is the unpredictability. So while it is vital for you to have a few correct upsets picked in your brackets, also keep in mind that those higher-seeded teams are in that position for a reason.

Another thing to remember is this: there is a reason why the “experts” are called experts. Especially if you are one of those who has not followed college basketball at all throughout the season, you’ll have to put in some time doing research before you fill out your bracket. The experts’ picks is the perfect place to begin your research if you are in this position. By looking at the picks that plenty of “experts” have made for each game, you can discern the consensus opinion and use this as a foundation for your own picks.

Finally, you will realize that there will be games where you simply cannot choose between two teams. Go with your gut in these games – that is the best solution! Even though you might be wrong on these picks sometimes, it is much better to be wrong having gone with your gut than to be wrong having gone against your gut.

You are certainly at a disadvantage if you are among those who are filling out a bracket without having watched a single college basketball game throughout the entire season. But if you take the right approach, this disadvantage is in no way unconquerable!

Understanding Dog Park Etiquette

Many towns and cities have turned portions of their popular parks into “dog parks” over the last few years. In these places, dogs can be off their leashes in a fenced-in area, and can play and interact with other dogs. And while you perhaps used to enjoy bringing your dog to the park where they could run and play, you might have avoided the dog parks. After all, no one wants to visit a dog park and have no idea what the proper etiquette is for using one! If you have seen these dog parks and have avoided them so far, you have no need to avoid them any longer, once you read this simple guide.

Most dog parks are separated into at least two areas – one for large dogs, and one for small dogs – and some dog parks also have a third area for dogs who are medium-sized. Make sure that you pay attention to the markings, so that you will be bringing your dog into the right area.

It is unlikely that your dog has a tendency to be aggressive if you are thinking of taking them into a dog park. But you should probably not bring your dog to the dog park if it is aggressive, as dog parks are not meant to be used as training grounds.

Most dog parks also do not allow food or glass bottles inside of them, and you should certainly be aware of this. In addition to these rules being in place to keep the dog park from getting cluttered, they are also in place to to protect the dogs themselves.

Check out these accelerated dog training tips!

And cleaning up after your dog when it goes to the bathroom is probably the biggest rule of all that you will need to make sure you follow. Dog parks typically have baggies and disposal bins all around them, so make sure you put them to good use.

As long as you know the rules of dog parks, they can be a great place for your dog to interact with other dogs – and they can also be a great place for you to interact with others!

Could the Sony Cybershot DSC-HX5V be the Camera for You?

Check out the Sony Cybershot DSC-HX5V!  This camera is Sony’s answer to Nikon and Canon cameras at the same price point. The HX5V is priced between $220 and $250 depending on where you purchase the camera. Both novices and professionals give this camera two thumbs up so take a closer look at the HX5V.

Both Sony’s DSLR camera and their camcorders have a G lens and the HX5V also has this lens in common. This point and shoot camera offers a 10X optical zoom (this is about a 25mm equivalent).  This is not too bad for a point and shoot camera. This 10.2 megapixel camera also uses a backside illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor that allows more light to hit the sensor. This is further assisted by the cameras optical and digital image stabilization options.

Unlike many other point and shoots the HX5V offers a lot of manual control. You will have the options of automatic ISO and a manual setting that ranges from 125 – 1600. You can also choose from many different white balance settings to help control your picture quality.

Bright days are always an issue for cameras with an LCD display.  The Cybershot tries hard to deal with this on their 3 inch display by making it an antireflective surface. This screen is a very nice size to help you compose your photographs and also to view any movies you may wish to create. Like many other cameras, the cybershot offers a dedicated video button.  This is a great feature as you don’t have to do a lot of menu changes to take movies. The videos are captured at 1080i and are saved into a MP4 format. One great thing about this camera is you can view the media directly on your television because the camera offers an HDMI out.

Do you like panoramic pictures?  The Cybershot has created a sweep panoramic option that takes breathtaking pictures. You can then tag your pictures with the built in GPS option so that when you up load them Google Earth or Picasa.

For the price the Cybershot is a great camera, and it has stayed neck and neck with the competitors. Sony has hit a home run with this camera. If you are a novice or a professional this is a great point and shoot for all user levels.

Eliminating Bugs from Your Summer

April 25, 2011 in Uncategorized | Comments (0)

With summer fast approaching, most people will want to spend a lot of time outdoors. There isn’t much better in life than doing some grilling outside on a nice summer evening. The only consistent thing that usually detracts from this type of evening is insects. Nights during the summer are amazing, but you will definitely be battling with insects for the entirety of your time outside. There are many different methods to keep the bugs away, but only one truly works.

Insect repellant spray is often a top choice by people trying to keep bugs away. Clothes and skin need to be sprayed for it to work. It usually has a foul odor to it and isn’t as effective at repelling bugs as most would like. Another option is to use torches that have citronella wax in it. This has shown to be an effective alternative in studies. It usually proves to be the worst option though.

If you really want your evening to be insect free a screen house is truly your only option. Your patio, yard, or deck are all great places for you to place a screen house and escape the onslaught of insects. A ten foot by ten foot screen house is available by swiss gear company. This is the perfect size for most people’s backyards. Everyone can enjoy the tent, but it isn’t so big that you have trouble finding a spot for it.

This screen house is also very easy to assemble. It can be taken down as quickly as it is set up; the whole process only takes a couple minutes. The steel frame is hollowed out, making it really easy to transport around. Wind won’t effect the structure since it is made to handle even strong weather. The screen and canopy fit over the frame. The canopy repels water easily and will cover you from most wet weather.

The Swiss gear screen house not only protects you from insects, but also from the elements. It can be brought to the beach or to the park and even stay in your yard. So don’t spend this entire summer fighting of annoying bugs and wrapping up parties early because of rain. Instead spend it in the comfort of a screen house from Swiss gear.

Purchase Carbon Monoxide Detectors

April 23, 2011 in Uncategorized | Comments (0)

Tags:

There are a good number of states that are now requiring home owners to have carbon monoxide detectors in their homes. This is really a good thing because carbon monoxide is toxic to living beings. Carbon monoxide is a gas you can’t see or smell.  This makes it extremely dangerous. Carbon monoxide typically comes from gas burning ovens, water heaters, and furnace that are not vented to the outdoors correctly. Living areas can quickly become dangerous when large amounts of carbon monoxide is not properly vented.

If you feel tired, nauseous, and have a headache, you may be experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning. If more then one person in your house feels this way, get out of your house right away. If you feel better after getting out of the house for a while, get a carbon monoxide detector you may have a problem on your hands. Prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide will cause not only brain damage but also, if the exposure is long enough, death.

The first thing you can do is make sure all of your gas and oil burning appliences are correctly vented. The second factor in carbon monoxide safety is getting a set of carbon monoxide detectors. As I stated earlier, many states are starting to make these mandatory for homeowners. You can easily find carbon monoxide detectors online or at your local stores.  There are some fire/ carbon monoxide detector that are a combination. I would ultimately recommend getting two separate units, one for fire and one for carbon dioxide.

There are also interconnected carbon monoxide detectors that are great for multi level homes. These can either be wired (you will need an electrician) or wireless. Wireless interconnected detectors give you the distinct advantage of being able to be alerted via all of the alarms if only one of them has detected something. Talk about an outstanding safety feature.

You will need to decide if you would like a detector model that is hard wired into your electrical system or if you are more interested in models that are battery operated. Models that have batteries need to have the batteries replaced once every six months.  Keep this in mind when you make your decisions also.

Keeping Your Dishwasher In Good Shape

You may never think about it while your dishwasher is running well, but your dishwasher is one of the most useful appliances in your house. Sure, you could certainly get by with washing your dishes by hand each night, but this would take up a lot of your counter space, as well as a lot of your time! With a properly working dishwasher, however, the only thing you need to do is load dishes, add detergent, and press the “Start” button. In order to keep this useful appliance as useful as it is supposed to be, however, you also need to make sure you know how to maintain it!

image

When it comes to dishwasher maintenance, one of the biggest mistakes people make is leaving far too much food on the plates they load in there. If you have a newer dishwasher, this might seem like it is no big deal, as the plates and silverware are still coming out clean. But your dishwasher will cease to be as effective over time, as this extra food on the dishes will end up wearing down your dishwasher. What’s more, all the little tubes through which water is supposed to flow out will become blocked by this extra food, and you’ll have to get in there and clean it all out (or you will have to pay someone to come do it!).

Another important element of dishwasher maintenance is choosing a dishwasher detergent that is non-abrasive. While you may not want to shell out the extra money for the “good” detergent, the small uptick in price is worth it over the long run!

People also have a tendency to overtax their dishwasher (and to keep their dishes from getting as clean as they should as well) by loading the dishwasher with way too many dishes at one time. When you load your dishwasher, stop loading if you are having to force dishes in; you would rather run two loads than ruin your dishwasher!

Finally, remember to regularly check on the working parts to make sure that they are, in fact, still working! It is not difficult to keep your dishwasher in good shape; you will save yourself a lot of money and a lot of headaches if you simply follow these few pieces of advice.

Places In America To Visit: Mark Twain National Forest

April 21, 2011 in Uncategorized | Comments (0)

Missouri was the birthplace of one of America’s greatest writers, Mark Twain; and now, 11% of the forested area in the whole state bears his name. Although you may not know much about the state of Missouri, it is one of the most beautiful states in the country, and it is a great state to explore for those who enjoy the outdoors. And most of the areas to explore are contained within the one and a half million acres that make up Mark Twain National Forest.

image

In 1939, the Mark Twain National Forest was signed into existence by President Franklin Roosevelt, as a means  to replenish southern Missouri. At the time, expansion and lumber mills had destroyed most of the state’s native forests, and efforts were made to re-plant and preserve. Since that time, these re-planted lands have flourished, providing those who live in the state – and anyone who lives near enough to visit or who is passing through on a road trip – a beautiful escape.

The Mark Twain National Forest is not a long, continuous forest – even though the name might imply this to be the case – but is, in fact, comprised of nine distinct forest areas that are taken care of under six separate ranger districts. This allows those who live all across the state – and who live near the state on the south, east, and west – easy access to these gorgeous forests.

image

Not only does the Mark Twain National Forest offer a rich history, but it also gives visitors lots of landmarks regarding this history that can be visited and enjoyed. A visit to Mark Twain National Forest is the perfect time for some hiking or camping, as the nine areas all have great trails and campsites. Primitive campers and equestrian campers will also find this national forest to be a paradise, as the beauty and the quiet are both truly breathtaking.

For anyone planning a small escape from the everyday rigors of life – or, for anyone planning a vacation on a budget – the Mark Twain National Forest is a tremendous place to keep in mind. This national forest offers something for everyone, and it is sure to leave you with memories that will last for ages!
